Mel Derzaph
Mel Derzaph was born in Medicine Hat, Alberta in 1945 and is primarily a self-taught sculptor. He has always had an eye for design. Before retirement he was involved in the design stages of several prominent buildings in the city.
A long-time member of the Medicine Hat Wood Carvers Club, Mel began with wood and turned to stone after taking a stone sculpture course. Since then abstract stone carving has become his passion, with the Birds in Flight series among his favourite works.
He spends hours in his shop carving both wood and stone, and welcomes conversations about any of the pieces shown here.
